in the days when the judges ruled there was a famine in the land bananas Bethlehem in Judah went to soldier in in the country of Moab he and his wife and his two sons  the name and the name of his wife Naomi and the names of his two sons were Mainland and Killian their effort Heights Bethlehem in Judah  they went into the country of Moab and remained there  the Dilemma Nick the husband of Naomi died and she was left with her two sons  these took moabite wives  the name of the one was orpah and the the other Ruth  who lived there about 10 years and both Mainland and Killian died so that the woman was last without her two sons and her husband  then she arose with her daughters-in-law to return from the country of Moab 4shared where in the fields of Moab that the Lord had visited his people and given them food so she set out from the place where she was with her two daughters in and they went on the way to return to the land of Judah but Naomi said to her two daughters in law  go return to her mother's house may the Lord deal kindly with you as you have dealt with the dead and with me the Lord grant Minecraft each of you in the house of her husband then she kissed him and then lifted up their voices and went you said to her know we will return with you to your people  Putnam said turn back my water supply where you go with me have I get suns in my room that they may become your husband  turn back my daughters go your way I am too old to have a husband if I should say I have hope even if I should have a husband this night then should their sons be there for wait till they were grown  freaky therefore refrain from marrying know my daughter's fart is exceedingly bitter to me for y sake that the hand of the Lord has gone out against me and they lifted up their voices the Lord do so to me and more also is anything that this person from you you saw that she was determined to go with her she said no more  so the two of them went on until the king for him when they came to Bethlehem the whole town stirred because of them and women said is this Naomi she said to him do not call me Naomi call me Mara for the almighty has dealt very bitterly with me I went away full  the Lord has brought me back empty why, Naomi is another word has testified against me how Mighty has brought Calamity upon me Chanel me returned and Ruth the moabite louder in love with her returned from the country is no answer and they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley Harvest how does Ruth chapter you must pray Lord as we study your word may you help us understand it maybe grow in our faith and knowledge and love of you maybe continue to cling to you as you have come to us we pray this in Jesus name amen  I think I was the only person in America who hadn't actually seen the movie and so finally this past week I got it as a present Christmas present and I actually watched the movie and I was how fun is excited who has seen the movie The Avengers The Avengers smoked ice I was ridiculed that I was the only person that I never watch that movie and so I did you guys know the Avengers are they if you don't if you never watched a movie that idea behind Avengers is it's a group of superheroes who have been brought together because well of course there's some band alien type creatures who are why do they always want to come to destroy us I don't get it they're coming down to destroy Earth and take over and now it's just one superhero that these Marvel book these Marvel Comic Book Heroes there's not just one that saves the day they come together they band together and they're super strength and as a group they're able to be asleep save the day and and everyone was rescued and what a great story it is and it's fun watching some of these superheroes in some of the powers they have course I was most unimpressed with Captain America right doesn't he the one everyone's like Captain America what can he do he's just where it's funny can clothes and throws a shield all over the place he's not awesome he's boring it doesn't do anything add there's something about it these action flick these Heroes it's something that just really excites me that's kind of the story of Book of Judges the Book of Judges is the book right before the Book of Ruth and that's where this whole story takes place as in the time of the judge and there was a sequence of events that happened the people would rebelled against God and and fall and go down a path they shouldn't a foreign power would come and a watch them they cry out to God and then these Heroes would emerge and they were called judges but unfortunately it's kind of a bad title from there really these Heroes common they rescue and save the day and they were super in their abilities and they were fantastic I've always told this message teenagers if you think the Bible is lowering the street to the Book of Judges is not boring at all I mean you got either the left-handed judge that stabs fat King on while he's on the toilet I mean and then go to win. This is to make the stuff off it's a real story and then you've got what's the ends up in her tent out of these weird circumstance and she says down to take a little nap and so he does and he sleeping he grabs a steak what's a right on his temple in and steaks him into the ground I know this good stuff in NE at Sampson right you know long flowing hair looks like Fabio but that's kind of really all he has up here he's are really smart and he pushes things over and kills a bunch of fees or great stories it's in the midst of these Heroes roof  root is not an action film it's more like a chick flick no fun fight scenes over half of the book is dialogue is no joke what stupid says like 5570 versus is all dialogue what's really need about it is the fact that said in the midst of these Heroes season crazy superhuman type people that are are lauded in a plotted you've got the story of Ruth a quiet girl  who was the hero but in a much different way it's easier for us to identify with her because she's just a regular person that's what I love about the story of Ruth and I hope you will too rich chapter 1 in the days when the is Roldan I did it I crossed out the word judges and put Heroes you know they're not guys up there with long flowing black robes and weird wigs and carrying gabbles hyzaar heroes from the days when the hero's ruled there was a famine in the land of the man from Bethlehem in Judah together with his wife and two sons went to live for a while in the country Moab we don't know who the author of the book of Ruth is but this guy is not interested in details at this point in time other good stories it's told in medias race it's in the middle of things we get thrust into the story and the author is trying to get us through some background information play the Guinness to the main characters because I have huge questions this famine in the land was that was that a god famine was this a hey I've got to punish the and so I'm going to send a famine thing and then they pick up this guy is names elimelec learning verse to he picks up his family up Roots them close to a neighboring country and stays there was this good was this bad where should you stop idea we have known commentator some passes been all day Hammer limit like they're like out there this guy uproot his family and take them out of the Chris Lampe and into another territory but there's others that says that there's really there's no judgement that's your this is more of just a story getting us the details we're not really here to talk what elimelech in fact the way that the story opens is a lot like the way that other stories open in the Book of Genesis Genesis chapter 12 talked about one of the big guys is names Avery play becomes Abraham you know the god of Abraham Isaac and Jacob this is it this is the big boy he's called the pay chart and look what it says now there was a famine in the land and Abram went down to skip to live there for a while because the family was severe there's no there's no judgement this is just a story was what Abram did good or bad did God tell him to. Not tell play it's kind of like this story same thing happens to his son Isaac in Genesis 26 now there was a famine in the land and Isaac went to Ave emelec King of the Philistines and go so you guys do kind of the same thing yet they're not hammered for their choices so I kind of reserve my judgment on elimelech saying I don't that's what he did is right or wrong there's also another story and second Kings where this woman is actually told you've got to leave you got to do this since now all I should send how man who Sunny had restored to life go away with your family and stay for awhile wherever you can because the Lord is to create a famine in the land of the last 7 years so here we know it's going to be a fan asking to be can use it from God so the one that preceded to do is the man of God it said she and her family went away and stayed in the land of the Philistines for 7 years play I guess I have kind of sauce for a lemon like because I know I know how I would react as a man looking at his family there they are living in this place Bethlehem which means House of Bread and strangely enough to House of Bread has no bread  and is this guy going to sit around and watch whose family starve to death  or is he going to do whatever it takes to save the family I know I guess I kind of feel for the guy I really do know what he did was right or wrong I don't know if God told him to do it I don't know if he did this on his own decision we have no idea what God thinks about it kind of like a lot of things in our own life but just because we don't know the beginning doesn't mean that some of those other details are going to give us some great lessons later on first two  the man's name was elimelech his wife's name was Naomi in the names of his two sons were mail on and Kelly and they were efforts from Bethlehem Judah and they went to Moab and live you got to imagine this is not hey let's pick up and move to Arizona because there's work there  this is hey let's pick up and move to India we're talking about leaving everything that is familiar that you know I'm going to something that is completely unfamiliar a different culture a different language different way of life a different religious Center  this is going to be radically different  I love that I don't get into names a whole lot cuz you know you always got to worry about names in the Bible you know where they really name that it was this more just kind of a nickname type thing but in this one they are kind of fun so I thought it would be good what's the deck look at elimelech means my God is King which serves does his overarching theme to the whole book of Ruth the fact that through movie stores do famines through death through all these strange circumstances and even in our own life we often ask a question is Gustav King  Soul emelec kind of serves stop Purpose with his name now elimelec is married to Naomi and her name is Pleasant she's nice she's got a great disposition straight fantastic and then they got the two kids mail on and Killian like I said I don't know if this is like their real names or fitted up being a nickname because mail on means a sickly and to Killian means Annihilation or death like so I mean yep it would you name your kids definitely in sickly play this is my kids H1 N1 in this is rotavirus back off so many killer that kind of just get the idea even if we were starting the store and you didn't know the end you kind of get the idea may lawn and killing I going to last talking to story are they definitely aren't going to be here for a while so these players that start off we got these four people they have now picked up rooted themselves and gone into the land of Moab first three in quick fashion again no details Sanilac Naomi's husband died  and she was left with her two sons you know the details how did he die what did he die because there was some sort of Judgment of God did he die just because he died and there's also his kind of weird irony that goes on in this thing where he left Bethlehem in order to save his life play ends up going to Mel Advan and he loses it we have no details so we can really make a judgment on what we think of elimelech hello pastors love to hammer him and I was very tempted to do the same things 11 likes not the reason the story is written  so a mic is now gone tell me now has to rely on her two sons she can't run down to the law office and get a temp job she can't go and become a local Barista at the Starbucks she has another way of providing for herself the only way she can is through her two sons so thank God definitely and sickly are still alive and verse for they married moabite is this good is this bad there's nothing in the Bible that actually says anything about this it doesn't give us a judgement called in fact it's been pointed out as a three through a bunch of commentaries know where in the Bible does it prohibit the Israelites from marrying moabite women it does say there are certain groups have been conquered that you cannot marry into the moabites for not a part of that there's only one passage that gives us any sort of hints and that's Deuteronomy 23 there's no a man remove item any descendants may enter the Assembly of the Lord even down to the 10th Generation so the idea is God doesn't say no you can't do it but it's not a good so it's frowned upon stop by women one was named Oprah and the other was named Ruth that is how she got her name not only just Wikipedia said but apparently as a couple people told me after the last service Oprah herself set it in several times and I don't watch over just to let you know she was born in mom gave her the name orpah and when they filled out the birth certificate they flipped the are in the Pea and by the time they caught it it was now a legal document there like Oprah it itself or Andrew that again we don't know did or did she marry definitely or sickly we don't even know have no idea who married who again it's not the point of the story  we just know that they're there  after that live there about 10 years both mail on and killing also hide in there we have it a Naomi was left without her two sons and her husband 10 years turn yours again it's compressed in our so we kind of get the feeling she has lost her husband and lost her kids while she lost her husband the ten years later she lost her sons what's also interesting in this is through those 10 years no children were born definitely and sickly had no kids orphan Ruth never conceived  you're wonder why what's this again that's been of God on them or was it just the way it was  what's really sad about the story is they now have nothing  there's no Social Security net she can't go down to the local office and apply for benefits  with what's up the men gone  the women are now done  they are going to be poor and destitute for the rest of the life imagine if you're Naomi you're still also living in a foreign land in a foreign land you have no friends you haven't been to Worship in 10 years your your sons have died can you get these two daughter-in-laws that are not even biologically related and don't even have the same ethnicity as you this is not looking good pause stories often get us to the conflict what's that tears  have you ever had it happen in y life when you've been driving down the road going to a place it's really really familiar and then you get there and you stop and go  I get here turn on did I drive it like I didn't stop signs did I don't even know how I arrived in this position what is I have to do a lot on the phone keep my phone down Dave I keep my phone down I hear a lot I really do  people come in and they say Pastor Manning I don't know fat butt  my marriage is not where it's supposed to be I don't even know what happened we're just cruising along in life and I now look around I go how did I get to this position how did it get so bad  give me with your kids I know people that go have a great relationship with my kids and all of a sudden what happened  that's not good anymore sometimes the other with job we wake up one day and go really is this  ever get that in your face do you ever wake up and sometimes look When It Go  this is a guy  I don't even like where I'm at right now  and how I'm living my spare trolleys sounds like gone I mean to Naomi ever realize after 10 years of not being in worship to maybe sometimes things are going to go bad In-N-Out people who experience things like that is as hard  slow drift away from we're God would want them to be  it's great when it those moments in time that that sometimes it's Calamity its problems that wake us up  add cause us to maybe assess where we're at it's better when it's not though right it's better when we come to those isn't this the time of year that we do this right but New Year's resolutions at you know I'm honest I don't do New Year's resolutions I agree with the Facebook post because New Year's resolutions they go in one year and out the other they just they're not even there they don't work for me at all but at least I wake about them  this is the time when we should at least stop and assess where we have this happens of funerals all the time nothing quite thinking about your own when you go to the funeral for someone else to go we'll wait a second where where am I at in life  that's that's what's happening here with Naomi look what happens birth sex  what you heard in Moab that the Lord had come to the aid of his people by providing food for them Naomi and her daughters and love prepared to return home from their return thing is it shows up that word shows up a disproportionate amount of times in the Book of Ruth what many times to be a coincidence this is a theme that's being developed coming back waking up and going I don't like where I'm at and I love when that happens in people's lives I've had over people say you know what I don't like or my marriage is that so I'm going to change it I'm going to get it back I'm going to return back to a time when it was something to strive for that same thing with my kids there was a time when things were good what happened I don't know but I'm going to return same thing with faith people wake up ago I don't like where I'm at with my face going to return  I'm going to come back  Naomi seems to exhibit this it's a very practical faith I know people like this probably YouTube where they'll have faith in as much as it's practical and helpful for their everyday lives but ask them to like be kind of crazy in their face maybe trust a little bit more or or do something Reckless soda speak in a faith way they got no no no no no no no no best kind of Naomi would have been better I think of Naomi would have woken up and said what am I doing here in Moab this is not where I belong I belong back I need to who's back if she was just come to that conclusion but she hears all there's bread the famine is over I can returns very practical but at least she is turn Super Paris to go back and daughters-in-law orpah and Ruth are going to go with the they made this decision we're going to go back for 7 with their two daughters and lost you left the place where she had been and set out on the road that would take them back to the land of Judah fantastic ideas as they're going they they're making this trip together they made this decision put on the road tell me is actually we're hosting a speech he's practicing something in her head because seriously really is it fair is it fair that these two women are going to hits their wagon to her and then end up themselves being foreign women widowed women in a strange it doesn't seem right does it doesn't seem  practical we seem to believe that they get to the Border now they're not the border of Moab in Israel Crossroads  Cadillac here we go what are we going to do now  so Naomi says go back  each of you  to your mother's home  may the Lord show kindness to you who have shown to your dad meeting her sons  and send me and may the Lord grant that each of you will find rest  Home of another husband is very tender I mean some people ghetto doubt her sincerity I actually believe it she uses some words that are very interesting play see the word Lord may the Lord you see how it's in all caps whenever you see that in the Old Testament what's happening there is there invoking the personal name of God letters yhwh you might hear people sometimes say Yahweh that's personal name of God it's how we identifies himself as y'all way so what she's doing she's not saying play Kmart the god of moabites bless you up she's saying No this is Yahweh Yahweh I want your way to show kindness that word she'll kindness is a powerful Hebrew word grace loving-kindness mercy loyalty devotion it's a word that is loaded with incredible meaning sing them say you know what you have shown such hazards to me  did I want Callaway to show that same kindness to you and I want you to go back  you guys still have time  Amezola lady  you guys can still play mat  and don't come and be a foreigner go back into Moab and there you will find rest and boy that's what a lot of people crave and that idea of finding resting in the house of another man it's designed it involve security and comfort Psalm 132 is just one of the places I liked it going to go back with you to your people Naomi turns on the practicality even more she talks more Naomi said return home my daughter why would you come with me and my going to have more sons who could become your husband's return home daughters I'm too old to have another husband even if I thought there was still hope for me even if I had a husband tonight and then gave birth to Sons would you wait until they grew up would you remain unmarried for them what she saying in this is that if you are you know if you're the mom and you had these sons and one of the sons died another son is supposed to help take the plates right stop the level right marriage and so she say look there's there's no one else definitely and sickly were all I had and they're gone pictures of even even if I got married tonight went out immediately got pregnant with twins are you going to wait bound until these two grow up so that you can actually legally marry them it's not practical better shot going back to your place there you're going to find someone don't come with me  and then she tips are hand no my daughter's it more bitter for me than for you because the Lord's hand has gone out against me and that's what happens when Calamity hits we have nowhere in there does it say that God is doing any of this stuff lower but that's how it's perceived that's how it's felt  she is bitter and I'm going to talk a little bit later about this bitterness because it becomes more and more evident in the life of Naomi and verse 14  at this they wept again and then orfa  kiss her mother-in-law goodbye she agrees you're right  it's better for me to go  so she turns her back on Ruth and Naomi and starts walking down the path  back to Moab  I don't fall through I really don't it's logical it really is  are you doing better she stayed but I don't blame for anything the story is really not about orfa or if it just serves as this kind of contrast to what happens with Ruth and what is Ruth do Ruth  claims about some weepy desperate just you know grab onto the knees and hold on the word that is being used there's a powerful word it's the same word used in Genesis chapter 2 that we here in marriage is all the time for this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be United they will cling together juicy the idea this is not hey things are really bad for you so I guess I'll just you now  we need more people like this roof who win good things happen in life they're not going to just jump ship at the first sign of trouble they're going to stick around they're going to clean Ruth is it going to have anything to do with this  and then Naomi tries again luck Naomi your sister-in-law is going back are God's go back with her in there about why didn't she just want both and Ruth to come with her because then going to land of promise they learn even more about Yahweh be a part of the worship blah blah blah would be a great thing but no you should just go back and listen to your going to be lost forever but oh well it's Naomi I don't think I don't think he's really thinking in terms of that Advantage I don't think again the text is really trying to point that out she's just saying this what proof is going back you should go back to  and then Ruth gives her speech a speechless very powerful first time we hear boo talk  don't urge me to leave you or to turn back from me where you go I will go  where you stay  I will stay your your people  will be my people and your God my stop  where you die I die on there I will be buried I may the Lord deal with me being ever so severely if anything but death separates us  do you hear this dedication it's actually very Progressive this she's looking a good meal me wherever you're going to go on and then you know what if you stop I'm going to stop right there with you  in fact you're the I renounce my people I'm not even going to be with my people anymore your people I'm going to be the foreign but they are going to be my people and I remember now scam hush I follow Java your God will I got that even had your bet she could have said you know what I'll stick with you as long as you're alive because when that beat still tender and nice isn't it look I'll stick around so you die and then when you die I'll be released for my she doesn't even do that she says where you don't even stay there until I die and where you're buried going to stop she serves as really this model of what even Jesus is done with us just pull even ask a question what's going to separate us from the love of Christ Jesus some things that could separate at the first sign of our whining and complaining isn't it great that when when we do something stupid God doesn't go out well so sorry fun see you later cling to you I'm sticking with you even through told and I feel bad I didn't you know I'm not saying any judgment but lady left in her name is Miriam happens to be a conjugation the word Mara sisters like that's my name since I am I smart on old wood reminded Hebrew of the store and its you should go and read what's 15 of the fasting store these Pete in the Israelites wandering through the Wilderness make it to this place and they're like there's water and they start drinking the waters Mara  interesting that Naomi does this and when was fax I like it do you know I like it cuz it's honest  hello how you doing today you would say I'm fine she was any one of those when it be great if you actually started answering honestly how you doing today I'm bitter and angry how are you actually fight because every time the people shake her head how you doing like I'm tired I'm angry I'm sad because the Chargers are going to lose to the Raiders what what what was that was some bitterness there I could play whatever you think we actually start I think we would scare people off if we actually started get it at least you know at least Naomi isn't walking around with this big plastic smile for you  you can tell she's on the brink she's going to break at any moment but she only says something I think she goes too far bitterness is a very interesting thing that happens for Naomi it now become such a identification that she's even willing to change her name  don't call me Pleasant call me bitter old what you saying  it has become such an identity for her now when people see her coming there's the better one  bitterness can be very damaging furnaces  blinding whenever we have circumstances hit us we often become so blinded by the things around us look it up also started right of Hebrews to it that no one misses the grace of God and that no Bitter Root grows up to cause trouble in to file many do you see that when we get bitter we miss  the grace of God it is hard for us to see I mean here's Paris bitter old woman and she's like I got none in the Lord's against me everything is bad what up and there's Ruth standing right next to her in something like do you ever notice that sometimes when we get so consumed the bitterness we even miss the incredible blessings around this  it happens how much lights it can be very difficult  when those things happen  is one of the quickest ways then to to get out of of that bitterness that Sonata set route to grow up is to actually start them looking at the great things you have in your life I mean she really could have said you know what I'm back here amongst my friends every turn I come home like the prodigal daughter  here I am back and I've got roof  Annabelle way but it was really hard on her became her identity  also listen to what's up all rights in Ephesians get rid of all bitterness rage and anger brawling and slander along with every form of malice I mean that's a great list right should we get rid of those things especially take bitterness off the list everything change will not get rid of malice anger Broly great things to get rid of bitterness Vanessa's blind bitterness is also a choice that's a hard thing to really think about but it's true  there are times in life when things are going to happen to us  but for every person that's bitter about their circumstances I can show you 10 people who have had the exact same thing happen to him in there not better  play I don't want this to sound harsh in any way shape or it really isn't designed to be that but that's we get we get this idea that that what's happened to us is so unique and you know it be hard to speak to me oh me in that tell me how many other people Naomi lost her husband and her kids have other people lost their husband and kids and we get this idea that we're the only ones feeling the way that we do that all the time when I do premarital counseling it always cracks me up or even Merrill counseling with young was there was the greatest they come in and they're like we're on the Rocks we're having so many problems with this this this and this and I listen to problems and I go you're nowhere near the Community you guys are having the exact same problems that every other couple in the world faces they're like real I'm like yeah church and everyone seemed so happy God look around all the same what's the matter when you think about it everyone Steph I'm not going to have you raise your hand but who is having a perfect life having a perfect life you might feel like you're having a good time now that you got to make a perfect like that bad things happen  sometimes again because we we get so blinded by the week we end up choose sing no one else knows how I feel but the people actually do  I would love I'm glad that we're out of place I would want people to comfortable coming up and saying I'm having problems or I'm better I'm angry  if there is ever a place where should be safe set  but we also know that it it's never to become our identity  if you go back to the story when they turn that place it was more on This Bitter Water do you know what the **** she fixed it you know what they did Moses grab the stick through it in the water and it
