History

For more than a century, St. Paul's Lutheran Church and School has been proclaiming Jesus Christ while educating generations of children in Orange County. From humble beginnings in a small farming community to becoming one of Southern California's premier Lutheran ministries, St. Paul's has remained committed to its mission of sharing the Gospel through Word, Sacrament, and Christian education.

1907–1947: A Foundation of Faith

  • 1907: Eleven charter members from nearby St. John's Lutheran Church organized a new Lutheran congregation in the Olive area of Orange.
  • The first church building was purchased for $500, and Pastor August Berner preached the first sermon on September 7, 1907.
  • Recognizing the importance of Christian education, St. Paul's Christian Day School opened its doors on September 7, 1908, just one year after the congregation was established.
  • As Orange grew, so did the congregation. A new sanctuary was constructed in 1912, and by the 1920s worship services were offered in both German and English, reflecting the congregation's transition from its immigrant roots to a broader community ministry.
  • The congregation celebrated its 25th anniversary in 1932, welcoming approximately 600 people to the celebration. 

1947–1985: Growth and Expansion

Like many Lutheran schools after World War II, St. Paul's experienced changing enrollment patterns. The school temporarily closed its elementary grades in 1947, but reopened in 1952 as demand for Christian education returned.

Rapid growth in Orange County soon required a larger campus. In 1957, the congregation purchased 5.5 acres at Heim Avenue and Canal Street and relocated from its original Olive Street location. The current sanctuary was completed in 1962, and the original property was sold in 1965.

 

1985–2000: Becoming a Regional Ministry

A defining moment came in 1985 when St. Paul's purchased the former Heim Elementary School campus from the Orange Unified School District. The school relocated to the new campus, providing room for significant growth, while the former school buildings became the Early Childhood Development Center (ECDC).

During these years, St. Paul's expanded its ministries by:

  • Establishing School Age Care (SAC) for working families.
  • Growing enrollment across Preschool through 8th Grade.
  • Becoming known throughout Orange County for excellence in Lutheran education.

2000–Today: Innovation Rooted in Tradition

The 21st century has been marked by continued growth and renewal.

Highlights include:

  • Expansion of the church property through additional land purchases.
  • Recognition of St. Paul's Lutheran School as a National Blue Ribbon School and an LCMS School of Distinction, affirming its commitment to academic excellence and Christ-centered education.
  • The launch of the Building for the Future campaign in 2019 to renovate the sanctuary and strengthen the school's tuition assistance endowment.
  • A complete sanctuary renovation from 2022–2023, culminating in a joyful rededication service in February 2023.

St. Paul's Today

Today, St. Paul's serves hundreds of families through:

  • Preschool (Infants–Pre-K)
  • TK–8 Lutheran School
  • Worship, Bible studies, and family ministries
  • Music, athletics, and service opportunities
  • Local and global mission outreach

While the campus and programs have changed dramatically since 1907, the mission has remained constant: to proclaim Jesus Christ, nurture disciples, and equip young people to live lives of faith and service. For more than 100 years, St. Paul's has sought to partner with families in raising children who are firmly rooted in Christ while prepared to serve their communities with wisdom, character, and compassion.
